Meet Team Birch: Catherine Rinaldo

Meet Catherine Rinaldo, a returning runner for Team Birch this year! Nearly six years ago, Catherine joined the Birch Family Services community and experienced firsthand the incredible impact we have on individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. As a founding member of our Young Professionals Board, she’s dedicated countless hours to volunteering at our programs and events. Now, she’s lacing up her running shoes and is ready to hit the pavement for Team Birch on March 16.

  • What inspired you to return and run for Birch Family Services again

CR: Every day I work with Birch I become more and more inspired to tell the story of the work they’re doing to help their community. Combining a personal passion for running and the desire to spread Birch’s mission makes this the perfect opportunity!

  • How has your connection to Birch Family Services evolved over the years?

CR: I first became aware of Birch when a friend of mine was involved with the organization. Then, I joined the Young Professionals Board and learned more about the mission of Birch, visited residences, volunteered at a school, and met the folks directly involved in Birch’s programs. The more I learn and get to experience their amazing work firsthand, the more excited I am about supporting them!

  • What keeps you motivated to raise funds for Birch Family Services through the NYC Half?

CR: Beating the goals of the other runners! (Just kidding). It is knowing every dollar helps Birch with vital services for New Yorkers.

  • Reflecting on your past Half experience, what lessons have you learned that you’ll apply to this year’s race?

CR: Specifically, for this course, I learned that there are a lot of different environments. Starting off in Brooklyn with amazing crowd energy, then going up and over the bridge, which is AMAZING but challenging, the FDR highway, which is flat but very quiet, then to Times Square which is a great way to finish out the race. It will be good to keep in mind throughout the race and know how to pace myself for each type of energy.

  • What advice would you offer to first-time runners preparing for the Half?

CR: I would say that a mix of training is super helpful – a combo between distance running and quick tempo runs!
