Meet Team Birch: Ben Nottingham

Next up on Team Birch is returning runner and dedicated supporter, Ben Nottingham. Ben has been an invaluable member of the Birch community for years, generously giving his time and energy to support various events and initiatives. His passion for Birch’s mission led him to run in last year’s NYC Half Marathon, where he experienced firsthand the power of community and the joy of making a difference for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

When Ben heard that Birch had been awarded spots in the 2025 NYC Half, he jumped at the chance to run again. For Ben, this race isn’t just about personal achievement—it’s about continuing to champion a cause he’s passionate about. As he prepares for the upcoming race, Ben is motivated by the opportunity to raise even more awareness and funds to support Birch’s life-changing programs and the families they serve.

  • How has your connection to Birch Family Services evolved over the years?
BN: Being involved in many Birch events, their Yong Professionals Board, and volunteering has taught me so much. I see the potential of the people Birch supports and love being a (very small) part of helping them get there.

  • Reflecting on your past Half experience, what lessons have you learned that you’ll apply to this year’s race?
BN: I over trained last year and suffered an injury. Trying to find a better balance this year.

  • What strategies do you use to stay focused and motivated during long-distance runs?
BN: I take it a mile at a time and really focus on staying on pace.

  • What advice would you offer to first-time runners preparing for the Half?
BN: Don’t sweat it too much. You can do it.

  • What aspect of race day or the journey leading up to it excites you the most?
BN: Running through Midtown/Times Square without cars and the people cheering is an amazing experience. The spirit and camaraderie of the other runners is also special.
