Meet Team Birch: Brett Saffer

Meet Brett Saffer, a proud member of the Birch community whose daughter is enrolled at the Riverdale Early Childhood Center. When the opportunity arose for Brett to run in the NYC Half Marathon on behalf of Birch Family Services, he was ecstatic. For Brett, it wasn’t just about the race—it was a meaningful way to give back to an organization that has played a pivotal role in his family’s life. He saw it as a chance to support not only his daughter’s school but also the broader mission of Birch, which empowers children and adults with developmental disabilities to thrive.

Now, as Brett trains for the big day, he’s motivated by the knowledge that every step he takes will help raise awareness and funds to support vital programs for Birch families. He looks forward to crossing the finish line, knowing that his effort is making a difference in the lives of so many.

  • What inspired you to participate in the NYC Half this year?

BS: I am an avid runner and had a great time running the NYC Half two years ago. I am happy to be running the race again.

  • Why did you choose to run and raise funds for Birch Family Services?

BS: I believe strongly in their mission to support people with developmental disabilities. As a parent of a child that is attending Birch, I want to advocate for the organization’s success, promote inclusion, and raise awareness about the need to provide quality services for people with special needs. This support is especially needed to make sure we are providing educational services for children with disabilities throughout New York City.

  • Have you participated in a Half or full Marathon before? If yes, which race(s) did you complete, and what was your experience like?

BS: Yes, I participated in the NYC Half Marathon two years ago. It was challenging and very cold, but very rewarding! I loved the energy of running with such a large group of people and it was a lot of fun to run through Times Square and Central Park.

  • How do you prepare for long-distance runs, and what keeps you motivated during the race?

BS: I prepare by eating a banana and drinking water beforehand. I clear my mind and put away my phone so I can stay present. I keep motivated during the race by listening to music and taking in my surroundings.

  • Beyond running, what are some of your favorite hobbies or interests?

BS: Listening to music, reading, and watching lots of sports!

  • What tips or words of encouragement would you share with other runners of Team Birch training for their first Half?

BS: Do your best to train every week and get ready for a great experience. There will be lots of people cheering us on during the race. Don’t worry too much about your overall race time just pace yourself and enjoy the run!

  • What are you most excited about as you prepare for race day?

BS: Running alongside so many people through sites such as Prospect Park, Times Square and Central Park!
