A Message from our CEO to Celebrate and Honor Disability Pride Month and National Disability Independence Day

Dear Friends,

July is Disability Pride Month, an opportunity to celebrate, recognize, and honor the history, achievements, and experiences of people living with disabilities. We can reflect upon the many ways people with disabilities have added to the diversity and strength of all our communities. We must always remember that this celebration is imbedded in the civil rights movement. The Arc’s National Council of Self-Advocates called for the 2024 theme to be, “We Want a Life Like Yours” – a simple and powerful statement calling on us to continue to look at how we may further create opportunities for dreams to be realized.

July marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) signed into law on July 26, 1990, prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, removing barriers to employment, transportation, public services, and other critical areas. This landmark legislation has made an impact in the fight for equality.

Since 1990, the disability community has become more visible and resilient, bolstered by the empowering force of the ADA. Individuals, their families, and advocates have joined together to raise awareness, champion greater access and create more opportunities in every facet of society. As we continue the work for a more inclusive and equitable world, we must take the time to celebrate the achievements and renew our commitment of doing all that we can to ensure the full participation and inclusion of people with disabilities in our communities.

We have made great progress, yet we recognize that there is still so much to do. Birch Family Services stands firm in our belief in the rights of every individual to lead a fulfilling life and our commitment to providing unwavering support for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities and their families. We invite everyone to join us as we celebrate our vibrant and diverse community and their dreams of a life of acceptance, belonging, and limitless possibilities.

With respect and admiration,
