Juneteenth Holiday and Remembrance 2023

“Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.” —Fannie Lou Hamer

Fannie Lou Hamer was a powerful voice in the voting and civil rights movement and an advocate for greater economic opportunities for African Americans. On Monday, we proudly observe Juneteenth – or Freedom Day – commemorating the end of slavery in Texas, the last state in the confederacy to do such, on June 19, 1865. It is a day that holds great historical significance. The day calls upon us to reflect, and most importantly, ensure that there continues to be access to voting, equal rights, and economic opportunities. Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder to educate ourselves, listen to others’ experiences, and learn to become better allies in the ongoing fight for equality, inclusion, and justice.

Today, let us take a moment to reflect on what more we can do to strengthen our organization’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion for all. Together, we can work towards a stronger, more inclusive Birch Family Services.  It is inspiring to witness our dedicated staff in schools utilizing literature and resources to educate our children and each other about the significance of this day.

We encourage all individuals, families, and staff to honor this holiday by actively participating in Juneteenth events, engaging with educational resources, supporting local black-owned businesses, and taking the time to reconnect with your community. By coming together in these meaningful ways, we can advance the conversation and promote understanding and unity.

Thank you for your unwavering dedication and commitment to the individuals we support. Your continued efforts contribute to our shared goal of empowerment and better lives for all. Thank you for being part of our incredible community. Below you can find a list of educational resources and events dedicated to furthering the conversation around diversity, equity, and inclusion. Together, we will continue to create positive change.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
