Supporting Our Community at Home: Jamel’s Journey

For individuals such as Jamel, a resident of our Marion-Creston buildings, having his own apartment is more than just a place to live. It is a reflection of everything he has worked toward, his stability, independence, and pride.

“I am glad that my apartment is in a peaceful neighborhood,” Jamel said. “I feel like my apartment represents how responsible and independent I am.”

Before moving into his current home, Jamel lived with family. He desired to live independently and found Birch’s supportive housing program. The transition marked an important milestone in his journey to more independence, giving him the opportunity to build routines, make choices, and create a space that truly feels like his own.

Inside his apartment, you’ll find decorations and motivational quotes from some of his favorite athletes. They serve as daily reminders of perseverance and discipline, qualities Jamel sees in himself.

Jamel currently works as a custodian and is already exploring new opportunities, including a second job. He describes himself as honest, hardworking, and determined. When he isn’t working, you’ll find him playing basketball in his new neighborhood.
