Supporting the Heart of Birch: Our Dedicated Educators
This year, as Birch Family Services celebrates 50 years of empowering students with disabilities, we’re reminded that the heart of our mission has always been the people who make it possible, our dedicated educators and generous donors. Every day, Birch teachers work tirelessly to create classrooms where neurodiverse students feel safe and ready to learn.
Today, we’re excited to share a message from an educator about the incredible impact your support has on our students’ lives. For Cristie Scott, a dedicated special education teacher at Birch’s Washington Heights Education Center, back to school season is about creating an environment where every child can thrive.
“As educators, we bridge the gap between school and home and have the power to make each family’s experience a positive one,” Cristie shared.
Cristie’s lifelong love for children and helping others, shaped by her own childhood learning disabilities and resilience in the face of challenges, led her to teaching. Since joining the Washington Heights Education Center in 2015, she’s embraced each Back to School season as a chance to inspire, connect, and ensure every child starts the year on the right foot.
“Every year brings new experiences, but one thing never changes: families entrust us with their most precious treasures,” she said. “My mission is for each child to feel welcomed, valued, and supported.”
Cristie knows the start of the school year can be joyful but also stressful—especially for families navigating financial constraints, medical appointments, and the unique needs of children with disabilities.
Your generosity ensures every student begins the year with the tools, resources, and confidence to succeed. Will you join teachers like Cristie in providing high-quality education to children with autism and developmental disabilities in New York City?
