From PreVocational to Professional: Michael’s Path to Further Independence

New Frontier member Michael B. worked hard building his skills to help him prepare to enter the workforce. Now, Michael is helping build a better Birch Family Services—one fix and one fulfilled goal at a time as the newest member of our facilities department!

Michael began his journey with Birch in our New Frontier program, which helps young adults transition to the workforce by providing vocational training, job acquisition, and ongoing support. Designed to prepare participants for employment, the program includes initiatives based in wellness, community living, and social opportunities to enhance life skills and ensure individuals like Michael have the tools and confidence to succeed. Initially starting with volunteer roles, Michael grew his skills and gained valuable work experience while discovering what he wanted his job to be. “I volunteered at all these sites and then I started applying for jobs,” Michael said.

After determining what career he wanted to pursue and working toward enhancing his job skills, Michael felt confident to enter the workforce. Although, he didn’t have to look too far to find his perfect fit. Michael’s desired career path of maintenance aligned perfectly with an open position in Birch’s facilities department as a Maintenance Technician.

“Since Michael has joined, we have seen a positive force and attitude added to the team,” said Director of New Development & Facilities, Stephen Markovic. “Michael’s eagerness and willingness to learn all about the processes and challenges we face on a day-to-day basis showcases his concern and abilities in our field.”

Working with Stephen’s team, Michael helps keep Birch’s facilities safe, clean, and efficient each day. He takes great pride in his work knowing that his position brings him something he has been looking for since joining Birch. “The reason I like this job is that it gives me more independence,” Michael said. “It makes me feel fulfilled.”

Another one of his favorite things about his new position is focusing on the impact he can make at work, both for Birch and for his team.

“I like the work that I do and making my coworkers happy,” Michael said.

“In the short time I have known Michael, he’s made a great impression on myself as well as the team,” added Stephen. “We look forward to seeing Michael grow, learn and accomplish his career goals with Birch Family Services.”
