My Journey: Growing My Confidence and Independence at Birch
Kelvin F., the author of this story, is a developmentally disabled individual who has challenges with verbal communication and uses the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to express himself. Through PECS, Kelvin has shared his inspiring journey of growth, confidence, and independence since joining the Community Habilitation (Com Hab) program in his own words.
My name is Kelvin, and I’m 34 years old. Since starting Community Habilitation (Com Hab) on March 13, 2024, I’ve been on an exciting journey of growth, learning, and self-discovery. Each day presents new opportunities to develop skills that help me live more independently, and the progress I’ve made has been truly remarkable.
One of the most rewarding parts of Com Hab has been stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new experiences. Every week, I sit down with staff to review my schedule, and together, we decide which activities to explore. Whether it’s visiting museums, strolling through parks, or taking a fun ride on the carousel, each adventure adds something special to my life. Bowling has become one of my favorite pastimes, and I’ve even had the chance to visit exciting places like Dave & Buster’s and Lincoln Center. What once seemed intimidating now excites me. I look forward to each new experience with curiosity and growing confidence. The more I try, the braver I feel—and the more eager I am to discover what’s next.
A major focus of my journey has been learning about community safety. Before heading out on any outing, my staff and I review essential safety rules to ensure I know how to navigate various situations. I’ve learned to recognize important signs like “Walk,” “Exit,” “Caution Wet Floor,” and “Emergency Exit,” which help me move through public spaces safely. I’ve also gained a better understanding of traffic lights and practiced safe street-crossing techniques. Where I once hesitated, I now confidently use crosswalks, making sure to look both ways before crossing the street. These skills have empowered me to feel safer and more in control of my environment when I’m out and about.
Another important part of my growth has been planning my outings. Before I go anywhere, I work with my staff to choose a destination and make sure I have everything I need. I always check that I have my ID card and enough money for any purchases I may want to make. Taking the time to prepare has helped me feel more responsible and in control of my decisions. It’s not just about going out—it’s about making choices for myself and creating the day I want.
Communication has also been a key part of my journey. My PECS book and iPad have been incredibly helpful in allowing me to express myself more clearly with my staff. Whether I’m planning an activity, making a request, or simply showing how I feel, these tools have made communication easier and more effective. Being able to express myself has strengthened my relationships with my staff and has given me more confidence in making decisions.
Recognizing street names and intersections has also been a significant milestone. At first, it felt overwhelming, but with practice, I’ve become more confident in identifying my surroundings. This growing awareness has made me feel more comfortable and empowered as I navigate my community.
Since starting Com Hab, my confidence and independence have grown immensely. I feel stronger, more aware, and in charge of my life. While I know there is still more to learn, I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come. This journey has shown me that with the right support and determination, I can achieve things I never thought possible.
As we celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, I hope my story serves as a reminder that with belief in ourselves and the support of those around us, we all have the potential to grow and seize the opportunities before us.
