Paws, Purpose, and Progress: Jo Finds His Footing Through New Frontier
Everyone’s first job teaches lessons. Jo’s taught him that having a job and having support are not always the same thing.
At 22, Jo had already spent time in the workforce, including working at a pet grooming store. But at his first job, he was the only employee. When questions came up, he did not always feel confident asking them. The responsibilities were clear, but the guidance was not. That changed when he joined New Frontier in the fall of 2025.
Working with Ben, his New Frontier Employment Specialist, on his interviewing skills and desired career path, Jo quickly found employment at the HI BK Doggy Daycare in Brooklyn.
“Ben got a feel for what I might like to do and what places might fit me,” Jo said.
Today, Jo spends his workdays restocking supplies, and helping care for dogs, cleaning up after them, watching them, and making sure their environment stays safe and welcoming. While he is proud of his employment, Jo explains that the job was more about just gaining employment.
“Part of it is building up to being more independent, learning to support myself, and learning new skills,” Jo said. “Of course, it’s also a way to earn money.”
What makes the work experience different this time is not the job itself, but the support he gains with it. With Ben being a mentor and job coach, Jo has someone he trusts to talk through challenges, ask questions, and advocate to his employer when needed.
“One of my most important jobs is to help Jo navigate the complexities of the workplace through hands-on coaching, answering questions, and giving both positive reinforcement and constructive feedback, when necessary,” said Employment Specialist Ben Foster.
“It’s been nice to have him there and be able to ask him things,” Jo said. “He can talk with my boss about how I am doing at work.”
That bridge—between employee and employer—has made all the difference. Jo says he feels himself improving step by step.
“I do feel like I am improving some of these new skills,” Jo said. “It feels good and helpful.”
“Jo is so dedicated to his work and is always looking to get better at his job,” added Ben.
For Jo, success is not just measured by each paycheck or completed task. It is about being heard, supported, and given space to grow at his own pace.
“Birch has been really helpful,” Jo said. “I have felt that I have had people there for me that cared about what I wanted, and it wasn’t just about getting me a job.”
While Jo’s journey is still unfolding, he continues to grow more confident and capable each day while Birch provides the mentorship and support that helps him succeed on the job.
“As his job coach, I want to continue to do everything I can to make Jo’s work environment as comfortable and enjoyable as possible so that he can be put in the best position for long-term success,” said Ben.
